An Introduction:
My affiliation towards music has grown like the steady rise of a perfect incline. From listening to hard rock in Linkin Park when I was young, to exploring instrumentals of all genres, to figuring out why these collective notes made such sense over the timeframe of a piece, I can surely say the journey has been ever so fulfilling. I’m glad it will be a never-ending one.
The Verse:
I was introduced into the world of music by my brother and I will always admire his taste in it. There was always this blend of all kinds of music, which I took a particular interest to. Of course, regional music was also there but I never really grew into it nor did I relate to the songs much. I didn’t realise it at the time but I was always a very melodic person than a person who enjoys the lyrics. Meaning, when people relate to songs they generally tend to relate to the particular lyrics of the song and the meaning it contains. I, on the other hand, could relate more to the melody and the tone of the song and my mind reverberated with that. As such, when I listen to some of the songs I listened to back in the day, I genuinely am surprised at this whole new layer of meaning which wasn’t there earlier. That’s such a beautiful thing with music, wouldn’t you agree? That things you’ve listened to countless times can still have more meaning when you look at it from another angle and another angle and so on…
The Chorus:
Being a progressing guitarist, I take solace in understanding the workings of these pieces and although I have only scratched the surface now, I’m sure as I go deeper, I will find myself even more. Talking about the guitar and instruments in general, the understanding people had to make these items of wizardry is unmatched. They are all things that can propagate the 12 notes of music but what one does with those 12 notes is particular to the instrument and the person playing that instrument itself. No doubt, the ones with a natural talent understand the workings of the instrument and the core of music more easily than the rest and if it is backed up by practice to the extremity, they are known as virtuosos. But even if one doesn’t have that talent, the willingness to learn is akin to it. An instrument is generally something that helps you to accomplish a task in a particular way, and I personally feel that task is nothing more than the message a musician wants to say through their symphony of notes. Sure, sometimes it may not have words, but if you listen deep enough you will find their expression taking shape in your mind.
The Bridge:
I’m sure every one of you reading this will have some connection to music, in one form or another. What one likes will not necessarily be liked by the other, but these are all just forms and variations of the very core, that is the 12 notes. Even if you have absolutely no interest in the theme and its components, we are still connected by nature’s harmony. Be it the sounds of a bird, the movement of trees, the bliss in rain, the waves of an ocean, I find these to be nature’s version of relaxation. When we have a hard time, we usually tend to listen to music to take our mind off of it. I think nature does it as well, for all the hardships she faces. We must be grateful that she shares her ears with us and make the best use of it.
The Outro:
To a musician, everything around them is a chance to hear and be inspired to create music. One may not agree with this and think it to be absolute rubbish, but just take some time and think about it. Whatever the creation, be it natural or artificial, isn’t there some sound that comes from it? There most likely will be a rhythm to it. All a musician does is make sense of all of that and express it through song or symphony, whilst adding their own touch and message.
As I learn more about this, my adoration for the concept grows in leaps and bounds. From the very beginning of time, this is something that has existed, we have only classified it to better suit our understanding. But remove all of that and strip it down to its absolute core, it will be the purest thing you can find in life. I think that is probably why we are so attached. Because we want that purity to enrich our very being.
This is absolutely wonderful. I’m in utter awe. I kinda wish this was longer. I can resonate w this piece so much. Also love the structure and the theme 🙂
